UPDATE:  The meeting on Tuesday, May 12th will be at 7:15a.m. (NOT 7a.m.).  Stop by Mrs. Beffa's room (NOT the band room) if you need to turn in service hours or dues.  Anyone who does not turn in dues by the 12th will be removed from membership.  You only need to attend the meeting on the 12th if you need to turn in service hours or pay your dues.  

NJHS is an honor society and service organization.  Each year at the beginning of second semester students who have maintained a cumulative GPA of  3.5 or higher are invited to complete the candidate process for membership.  This process includes filling out and turning in the Student Data Form, participating in a teacher evaluation, and taking part in a interview with the faculty committee.  After completing this process, candidates who are selected for membership will be formally inducted into NJHS during a ceremony in the spring. 

Once a student is inducted into NJHS he or she remains a member for the rest of their time at the middle school unless they fail to meet one of the requirements of membership. 
In order to maintain membership eligibility, a student must pay the $2 membership dues each year, maintain a 3.5 GPA, maintain a positive record with regards to school  citizenship, and complete all required service hours.  Any student failing to meet these requirements will be notified in writing and placed on probation.  Certain serious circumstances may require immediate dismissal.  If this happens, the student will be notified in writing as well.   

Each returning NJHS member is required to complete a minimum of 9 service hours in a school year.  New members who are inducted second semester will be required to complete a minimum of 6 service hours.  There will be events sponsored by NJHS throughout the year that will provide an opportunity for students to obtain service hours.  Students should listen to the announcements and sign up for remind 101 to learn when these opportunities become available. 

Students can also obtain service hours on their own by volunteering in the community.  The verification form should be filled out when earning service hours outside of an NJHS sponsored event.  The verification from does not need to be filled out for NJHS sponsored events.  Those hours will automatically be applied toward their total required hours. 

Each student will need to sign up for at least one shift for Relay for Life.  These hours do count toward their total service hours.  Relay for life requires a lot of workers.  For this reason, I ask that everyone sign up for a shift and plan on obtaining a minimum of 2 of their service hours from Relay for Life.  This should help you plan the remaining hours accordingly.  Relay for Life takes place in early May.  Students will be informed when the exact date is made available.

Relay for Life Info:

There are three shifts available.  Sign up with Mrs. Beffa.  There is a parental consent form that should be signed by a parent or guardian before the student will be allowed to participate.  Students without the consent form will not be able to participate and will not receive credit for the hours they work at Relay for Life.   

The shifts are:
Shift A--4p.m. until 6p.m.
Shift B--6p.m. until 8p.m.
Shift C--8p.m. until 10p.m.
